Message direction, so the gear ratio is opposite. In 5th gear it's hard for the engine to to turn the wheels, but it's easy for the wheels to turn the engine.

Another way to look at it - If you're coasting in gear, which gear causes you to coast down the fastest? 5th gear, or a lower gear?

If you still have doubts, go find the steepest hill around you. Stop, turn off the car, put it in 1st, let off the brake. You probably won't roll. Put in 5th. If the hill is steep enough, the engine will start turning over and you'll roll.
